Fortune 500

Retail behemoth Wal-Mart topped the Fortune 500 list, with Exxon Mobil, General Electric and Ford Motor also among the top ten most profitable corporations in the United States. In case you were wondering, none of these companies were on Fortune’s 25 “Best Companies to Work For.” Here’s a rundown of the top ten, released Thursday:
Wal-Mart: With more than $421 million in revenue, the Wal-Mart chain of stores, known for their florescent lighting and cheap prices, topped the list for the second year in a row. If working for this number one company appeals to you, you can apply for one of the 1,000 jobsavailable.
Exxon Mobil: The oil company maintained its number two rank, thanks in part, Fortune reports, to higher prices for crude oil. The company is currently looking to “hire exceptional people” to fill 2,300 openings.
Chevron and ConocoPhillips: These two petroleum refining companies took the number three and four spots on the list.
Fannie Mae: This embattled company jumped from number 81 last year to number five, primarily because of “new accounting rules,” Fortune said.
General Electric: GE, which did not pay any taxes in 2010, dropped two spots this year to number six. Fortune reports that GE currently has 8,320 openings and is looking “for candidates who focus on the customer, are clear thinkers, generate new and creative ideas, value teamwork, and are experts in their field.”
Berkshire Hathaway: Under CEO Warren Buffet, conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway rose from number 11 to number seven.
General Motors: The bailed out car company rose seven spots this year to number eight.
Bank of America Corp.: Bank of America, another top tenner that did not pay Federal taxes in 2010, currently has 4,720 openings and gave this long list of tips to prospective hires going to recruiters: “Know the types of positions you are most qualified for and interested in. Be focused in your approach to demonstrate you can match your experience and skills to the organizational requirements. Be able to demonstrate that you've done research on the company, its businesses and the roles you would be most qualified for. Show initiative and desire; demonstrate that you are interested in joining the organization by attending the company's events and meeting its recruiters and leaders. Prepare questions: the right questions demonstrate your interest and understanding of the company and role.” Sounds simple enough, right?
Ford Motor: According to Fortune, strong sales of the Fiesta and Taurus caused the company to turn “in its best annual profit since 1999 last year.”
